After the excitement of the Americas Cup, the Vendee Globe preparations are being finalised and boats heading to Les Sables in France.

The technology, data and general access to sailors on an almoat daily basis is just amazing..

I try the app every year but life always geta in the way....

Anyway who are you following ? It feels like global weather systems are a bit lively at the moment - could make for some added drama !

We defo following Pip Hare in Medallia and one other, yet to be decided...

I really enjoyed this last time round.

The daily YT show was great as was the Malizia/ Boris Hermann team daily weather updates.

The on board video and insight you get now is quite impressive

Following!

Probably a daft question, what channel is the daily YouTube update on?

Just came here to ask the same question. I’m watching some of the pre race footage now.

Last time round there was a daily lunchtime show in English on YT with interviews and maps and footage. It was a bit amateur, but it was interesting.

I also found an independent / amateur chap that was providing daily updates but I can’t remember who he was.

As well as Will from Malizia who did a great weather / tactics thing every day. I hope he continues to do that this time around

I'll be following Pip too.

I watched a Youtube video by Aquaholic (Nick) a few months ago and he interviewed Pip and it showed the boat she was sailing in which is primitive at best! Sailing around the world in a cruiser must be tricky but none stop on the Vendee Globe is something else ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q876ba-rAN4&pp...

I’ll be following Pip and Sam Goodchild, and doing virtual regatta.

Hopefully the weather gods are kind to all the competitors this year.

Seawolves TV was the YouTube channel that I followed last time

It’s amateur but worth 10 minutes a day while the race is on. I seem to remember he did a decent weather piece and allows you to keep up to date nicely

Yep I’ve done that before too! This is the first one I’ve started at the start though I’m currently sailing myself towards the back of the fleet.

A good night for a Charlie Dalin and Sam Goodchild.

Seawolves is back covering the race, this time as an official Vendee media partner. After the amuse bouche that was the Americas Cup it is now time for the real deal...

I did know of Seawolves before, but have been enjoying it thumbup

Seeing the way Charlie Dalin came to the front of the fleet yesterday morning I was worried we was going to romp off out the front, but we seem to still have a race.

Enjoyable start to the race this year. Pip doing OK, Boris a bit disapointing but there is a long old way to go yet.

Always good to see Jean Le Cam do the contrarian thing. Would love to have seen him take a proper lead because of it, but it looks like it's not quite worked out that way......

Yeh Pip and the 2 Sams doing well.
Amazing to see the route Nicolas Lunven took- heading way west into good wind from north of spain, to come back to the pack in a good position.

In virtual world i went east of Cape Verde too but struggling to get west again at any decent speed. Might have to risk it and stay east a bit longer than JLCam did...

Does the year that the boat was built have a big impact on performance, or can good seamanship make up for it?

It looks like it does, or is it just too soon to make that judgement.

Only just discovered this not being a huge sailing fan but decided to follow Pip.

Finding it really interesting and I have huge respect for these racers.

The boats are pretty brutal places to be.

I think it's a bit of both and they are not independent variables. The better sailors have better sponsors and funding and therefore better boats built for this race cycle.

As a case in point, consider the 'Vulnerable' boats. Sam Goodchild is in a previous generation foiler and was right up the front for the first couple of weeks so is clearly a 'good' sailor. He was in the right place when the current front they are surfing from Brazil to SA became the thing to be on. So was his 'teammate' Thomas Ruyant who has the newer gen boat. On the 23rd they were third and second respectively and only 12nm apart.

Since then they've both been on the same consistent gybe riding the same front so relatively minimal sail craft needed. Thomas is 3rd and Sam 7th with 160nm between them. The boats that have 'overtaken' Sam are all current gen boats.

Thanks, in good winds there seems to be about 2km at lest between the best and Sam. It is amazing just how close the first 3 actually are after nearly 3-weeks.

Le Cam snuck into the lead going past the Canaries, but is now down to 21st but has the lead in non-foiling boats.
