Another interesting video, with the added point that my Dad spent a couple of days on Odin during his time in the RN. FWIW he hated it and was happy to get back onshore.

I only just noticed that all instructions are repeated back, is this still the case nowadays?.

Yes, read backs are a basic check. Same reason why pilots have to read back instructions from Air Traffic control. You can hear instructions being repeated back in his modern day documentary aboard HMS Vengeance:

Worked with a couple of lads (back afties) on the Astue design who started their careers on O Class boats before moving onto S Class.

They weren't fans either. Cramped and uncomfortable compared to the bigger nuke boats.

Thanks for posting, I'm going to share that with a couple of front s and back afties I work with now.

A good friend of mine – a notable submariner – started off submarining on these boats and, IIRC, was of the view that they were an unfortunate loss to the fleet because they could do some things better than the big new boats. Much like the RAF misses the C130s.

There was a point where this was true as the smaller boats could operate in shallower waters, but the capability gap was addressed via DDS and SDV kit. (Dry Dock Shelter - Swimmer (SEAL) Delivery System

In theory a DE boats can be quieter but most of the sneaky beaky photos and snipping during the cold war were Churchill / Swiftsure class boats as they had the stamina.
