Apparently they've had a bit of rain in Dubai...

...I'm amazed they know where the taxiway is - presumably using GPS?

If they need to evacuate, they can chuck a couple of the insta duck lipped individuals that frequent “Doobs” in and use them as rafts.

737 owners will be regretting it, all those low-danging motors.

It'll get back to normal quickly, they'll get their slaves onto it and mop it all up.

I remember reading that water ingestion in turbofan engines can help them get more power and lower the temperatures.
Not sure if that's about too much water lol

Well, Me109s had water/methanol injection so you're halfway there. Chuck some meths in the front and see what happens...

As for drainage, sand is very fast draining and Dubai is made of sand so it will all be gone by tomorrow. But there will be some big insurance claims from all those flooded Rolls Royces.

I suppose some people will say 'Well this is all down to climate change and that's where all the oil comes from so it serves them right haha'. Me, I'm surprised there's any rain left after 3 months downpour over the UK.

I wonder if they will retrofit storm drains around the airport and other key bits of infrastructure to prevent such scenes again? As you say they have infinite slave labour for such jobs.

Apparently they get these freak storms every 75 years. My nephew lives out there, his road is badly flooded and he lost electrics due to a small leak in the roof but has got off lightly compared to his neighbours judging by the videos he sent me. This is the road he lives on :

Dubai Airport is effectively EOL at this point, it'll be replaced by Al Maktoum in the coming years.

When it rains here, it's a bit like when it snows in the UK - the whole place descends into chaos for a few days and then everything goes back to normal again. This was pretty bad because it was a 1 in 75yr storm; we had a bad storm around a month ago too, that went on for longer but I think less rain fell because it caused less damage.

Interesting, thanks. I have just been reading up on the plans for Dubai World Central. Amazing what can be achieved with minimal red tape and endless cheap labour. Makes you realise how stagnant things are in Western Europe.

Regarding freak weather events I always chuckle when I see all the redundant snow clearing equipment parked up at LHR and LGW. IIRC they were panic buys after a bit of snow more than 10 years ago and largely unused since.

Your recollection is wrong.

The snow equipment at LHR was bought in the back of the Begg report, circa 13 years ago.

The equipment, hardly redundant, has been used numerous times since then and is exercised several times each winter, snow or no snow, when the airport team undertakes snow drills.

Given how busy LHR is a day's lost revenue through snow disruption would probably pay for the equipment several times over.

Surely it's snowed in London since 2010? I know living on a hillside in darkest Aberdeenshire my perspective is probably a bit off but no lying snow in 14 years still seems a bit far fetched?

Back on topic - a friend rents a very pleasant villa in Muscat. The first time it rained it leaked like a sieve, literally water pouring on his head while he lay in bed. He obviously phoned the landlord who said "don't worry, it'll soon dry!".

Yes, cheerleading stone age theocracy that cheerfully employs slave labour is a low even by PH standards.
