Brought into the museum yesterday, it's brass, about 60mm long and 12mm dia, the inner slides out of and fits snuggly into the outer case. The inner is hollow with a mirror at 45 degrees at one end. It has an inscription of a "crown", about "22" and the letter "E".
It's like a very small periscope as if to look into something or we also wondered if it was something to either shine a light into something or maybe concentrate sunlight to create fire? The loop at each end makes it look like it should be on a chord or chain but why if you pull it apart to use unless that's just to stop you losing it.
We were baffled.

My guess would be inspecting a gun barrel.

That’s quite the comprehensive answer, thanks for the interesting link too. Note to self, must try harder!

I've known Taff for 25 years - you'll see him on TV occasionally as a military historian. Top bloke and always keen to inform and educate so I'm sure he'll assist if you have any future mysteries!

Great detective work.

I hadn't a clue although I had a feeling it was some sort of inspection device. At least it wasn't an early form of endoscope eek
