Good Tram or Trolleybus museums
Discussion
Hi all
I want to take my dad to a tram or Trolley bus museum, ideally one where we can have a ride on them.
We're based in Herts and happy to drive up to 3 hours, maybe a bit longer.
Anyone recommend any?
So far in my search I've found East Anglia transport museum but looks small and the Trolleybus museum at Sandtoft but I can't tell if we can actually have a ride.

This is easy - the Ipswich Transport Museum: https://www.ipswichtransportmuseum.co.uk/ (the museum is much better than the website)
I was there on a car club visit last week and not only is it surprisingly large but filled with very well restored examples of everything, some of which you can go aboard. It's manned by very keen and knowledgeable volunteers.

Perhaps too far for you, but well worth a visit:

(the Aston Workshop and Car Barn are just around the back so if he's into cars too you could do that as well)

...they don't mind you just going in and having a mooch around the showroom.

You have Beamish, Crich, or the Birkenhead tram museum. I suppose you could do Birkenhead on a day out with a trip on the Mersey ferry as well.
There is also the Seaton Tramway in devon which is quirky and has live webcams (warning - they're addictive to sad people like me )

another vote for the Birkenhead Tram Museum - a surprisingly nice place. As you're in Herts isn't there the option of the London Transport Museum (which I'd imagine would feature trams/trolleybuses?)There is also the Seaton Tramway in devon which is quirky and has live webcams (warning - they're addictive to sad people like me )

That's what I was thinking. From the Covent Garden museum you can walk over to Kingsway and look at the old tram tunnel entrance which still has rails in place. Then get the District Line (or a train from Waterloo) down to Wimbledon and get on a real modern tram that runs through to Croydon town centre. I think it takes about half an hour. You can get back from Croydon on the tram or by fast train. The London Transport storage depot in Acton is open on some days of the year. Needs to be booked in advance.
Has he ever been on the DLR? You can pick that up at Bank underground station or near Tower Hill (Tower of London).
Thanks all, really appreciate the replies.
RE London transport museum, we went a few years ago and was really good. We want to get on a tram and/or Trolley bus that can move.
My poor old dad is early stage dementia so want to take to one or two places where he can remember and reminisce.
We're going to take him to Beamish and stay up there. Will go to Sandtoft too and try and get to Orford Ness as well as he's keen to go there. Keeps talking about looking for a Stirling wing!
Thanks again all. Will. Let you know how we get on.
