Really sad to see what happened to the Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre especially given the Virgin Orbit mess.
Anyway, CAHC have couple of interesting items for sale on ebay at the moment

They both seem cheaper than I would have expected, even with VAT on top. That being said, I won't be rushing to purchase either of them.

I saw a lightning in the metal a few weeks ago for the first time, I was really surprised at how big they are!

That does seem very cheap indeed.

In 1990 I tried to buy a Folland Gnat which was being auction by Sotheby’s on behalf of the MOD.

It was in poor condition and the engine had been removed.
The pre-sale estimate was £2000 - £3000.
It was local to me and I thought that it would be a fun thing to have.

In the event it sold for £35,000 plus buyer’s premium!

How much is it to dismantle and transport one though because that's on top of the purchase price and VAT?

Depends. Sometimes you’ll have volunteers dismantling, and a friendly lorry driver offers his services. So, from nothing up to tens of thousands?

Why shouldn't there be?

If the entity that is selling the items is VAT registered then they must charge VAT on things they sell - unless there are special rules in respect of the specific items they are selling.

I thought it was a museum therefore a charity and these were old and effectively being disposed of. its not like they are actually useful as equipment.

The big problem here is the cost of transport once you have bought either aircraft. A similar discussion in the Flypast magazine had someone saying they were dissuaded from saving a complete Canberra due to the cost of transport. This came to approx £40,000-45,000 . That included the cost of the Police escorting the trucks. He ended up saving the Cockpit and some of the other components.

You also need to consider that you require somewhere big to store it and some help to stop it deteriorating after you get it.

Being a charity is no indicator of whether VAT is applicable or not.

Charities have to register for VAT too if they operate any sort of business or trading entity and the turnover exceeds the £85,000 threshold. They can Zero Rate certain provisions of services (such as installing equipment for disabled people) but if they are conducting general trading to generate funds, that will be VATable.
