Two aircraft were built for a USAF specification for a short-field performance strategic cargo aircraft, the Boeing YC-14 and the McDonnel Douglas YC-15. In the end, the US government decided not to go ahead and the two aircraft were only built as prototypes.
However, the later McDonnel Douglas C-17 Globemaster II uitilised a lot of work that had gone into the YC-15. Ironically, McDonnel Douglas was bought out by Boeing so now the Globemaster is referred to as the Boeing C-17.
