My vote goes to Manchester as well - image at the end of this article (https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/police-cancelling-holidays-mammoth-queues-24121991.amp) shows the check-in area from a slightly different angle.
Oh yep there is the Zone A signs. 808 Estate said:
UK airports are probably the worlds worst for queues to get checked in, through security and back through passport control when you arrive back.
The rest of the world can manage it without snake queues everywhere, why are our airports so f
king useless.
Oh not they can't. Schiphol has had people queuing outside recently, plenty of times people are waiting several hours just for baggage drop....and then having to join the queue for passports. The rest of the world can manage it without snake queues everywhere, why are our airports so f
king useless.Dublin is similar or worse to this also, Queues for security out into the car park on multiple occasions, even at 2.30am.
So its not "the UK is so bad at everything blah blah blah"
Most of this is lack of staff available in airports in many places due to laying off staff during the Covid downturn.
I was stuck at a queue in Manchester flying home to Belfast back in April. Took 3 hours to get through security, the airport was having to hold flights as long as they could or they would have been leaving pretty much empty. It was bedlam.
My Flight that was supposed to depart 18.45, actually departed at 21.40.
The manager the airport ended up resigning over it, and other such incidents.

Yep.Massive amount of staff culled, and then all of a sudden, there's no staff to cope with the sudden upturn in demand. They really weren't expecting such an upturn in demand, it was expected to be a gradual slow recovery, not what actually happened.
Surprise, surprise, many of the staff culled, have no desire to come back to their jobs, as they've either found something else, or have retired.
With so little staff left, and high demand, its impossible to train any new staff, plus if the jobs are airside, many prospective new people might not pass the security checks, so that's having an impact as well, as that's a major stumbling block in many cases.
Plus even those that can, are having to wait 3+ months for the airside pass before they can actually start work......because there's not enough staff in the airport ID centres to process the sudden demand for new starters for those that have been found.

You ever been through Frankfurt on a Friday afternoon. Done it once and that was when I realised why the check in halls were so big - they were packed. The rest of the world can manage it without snake queues everywhere, why are our airports so f
