I will have a 10.28m powerboat that I want to keep in Poole. I intend to use all year round or at least 9 months of the year as it has a heated enclosed cabin. I think its too long for the dry stack at 10.28 and the dry stack seems a long way in. Salterns marina looks ideally situated. I am completed new to the area and boating in the area. Any advise welcome.

Afternoon. I assume you are hoping to find a berth for your boat this year?

You may have limited (or no) choice for this season and will have to accept a less than perfect marina berth/mooring if you can find one. I would start (pronto) by finding out which marinas have availability, as Poole is very popular, and you would also be wise to contact the Harbour Office too.

Salterns is probably the finest commercial marina in Poole Harbour for access and facilities but Parkstone Yacht Club would be my choice if you could get a berth but, I'm guessing their waiting list is very long?

Good luck, and waste no time making enquiries.

This ^ gives you plenty of time to investigate options but be aware, none of the marinas will give you a definitive yes/no until closer to that date but will take a deposit from you to add you to the waiting list.

I would recommend joining Parkstone as a member now whether or not they can offer you an annual berth.

Cobb's Quay is good, and a bit cheaper, as there are two bridges that open every hour, meaning you have to time it right. But you get to go past Poole Quay, which is nice.
There might be a waiting list to join though.

Agreed, but the OP asked which is the 'best' marina in Poole and whilst Cobb's is a popular place is does require some patience and knowledge of local access, which doesn't suit everyone.

I'm sure there are pro's and con's for every marina in Poole (like everywhere else) but, if money is no object, there is only one for unencumbered access with 5* facilities, unless you can wangle a berth in Parkstone!

You asked for the best, and the best is for those who never ask the price! wink

Hopefully you have applied to join?

Club membership isn't for everyone with all the 'flag officer' palaver and an expectation to 'join in' the social side of things, also the waiting list for a floating berth at 1/3 the price of Salterns may mean a long 'weight'. Even the dry berths may be over subscribed, with a waiting list, but notwithstanding all that, it would be a lovely club to join, if and when you move to the area, and as a member you will be able to make use of all facilities and 'park' your MB at reduced rates.

In the summer Cobbs is the easiest to access for traffic.

It can get very congested on the roads near the others.

This !!!

Depending on where your coming from but at least Cobbs is off the tourist traps. Yes the bridges can be an issue when they fail. I've kept my old boat there before & brother does currently. There's a nice atmosphere down at the bar too. My tip would be buy a boat that fits under bridges

Have moved slightly further north these days & wince at a 4k bill for a 10m Yacht in a Marina. Cant beat a mooring you can see from your house thumbup

Regardless of being able to get under the bridges doesn't it take ages to get out to the open sea? What height are the bridges? I'm going to have a look at Parkstone tomorrow

I had a happy 5 years at Cobbs - parking and access is easy which is a bonus, but timing your day around the bridge lifts isn’t ideal, but not a deal breaker. The facilities are good and the marina bar/restaurant provides a fairly nice place to be. For me the main downside was that apart from the marina bar there weren’t any other options and certainly wouldn’t want to walk into Poole from there. At the moment you may need to see where has availability and go from there - if you end up at Cobbs I don’t think you’d be disappointed. I’m now at Weymouth and miss having a marina bar as you can quickly find people who knows someone who can get most jobs sorted!

'Poole Bridge' has 2 metres and 'Twin Sails Bridge' 1.7 metres of HW clearance when closed.
Headroom displays are provided on the bridges so it is possible to accurately gauge if a low vessel may pass beneath without a lift.

Another vote for Parkstone - friendly bunch and have a nice clubhouse. The basin is roomy and plenty of depth.

Thank you all .. Starting to build up a picture of the options. My boat will be higher than 2m with the radar etc so would have to wait for bridge raising.

Someone else will correct me but iirc the bridges raise every hour on the half past. And if past performance is anything to go by the twin sails one will break down and have to be left raised anyway.
