Nice. I remember getting a few lifts in the back of German Hueys back in the 90's. Nothing like that two-blade whop-whop-whop. Not sure if they still operate them.

Last week there was a white twin Huey (I'm sure someone adenoidal can give the correct nomenclature - registration G-BIGB) lugging great big bags of something or other on Saddleworth Moor. Fantastic.

yes At the time I was using a two-stroke petrol strimmer and wearing ear defenders. I still heard it well before I saw it!

When I was a teen way back in 1973, we used to get an Irish Helicopters Bell 212 transiting across Dublin on its way down to Cork. I think it used to fly between Newcastle and Cork and would pass overhead Dublin at around 10,000 feet. You could hear the rotors about 20 minutes before you saw the chopper.

I saw this one over Thursley Common on 29/2/19. First Huey I’d ever seen flying. Impressive brute.

They used to be stationed in Belize but now all used in the UK for army Air corps training.

The RAF operate the Griffin (being replaced) which is a 4 bladed variant both for initial flying training but also for SAR in Cyprus.

We see them quite a lot when walking in the Peak District. I think it’s part of the Moors for the Future project - lifting bags of stuff to re-seed damaged peat moorland.

Read a book called 'Chickenhawk' a while ago.great book.recommend it.

A few party tricks of the 'Huey'....run engine to take off power then back to idle....the interia carried in those big heavy rotors allowed a quick take off.....spin 360 degrees and land on the spot.....at engine idle......

In combat during Vietnam the author also describes using those rotors to effectively chop a vertical tunnel through the jungle to land and extract injured troops.

I saw a Huey display at The Yorkshire Airshow a couple of years back, great sound up close and personal.

That and the Vulcan my 2 favourite displays from that day.

It's a great book. I gave it to my brother to read.

He's a commercial helicopter pilot now.

It is but the 212 is twin engined whereas the UH-1 is single engined - pretty significant difference. The B-204 was the closest civil certified equivalent.

Pretty sure it flew over my house a few mins ago. White huey, but didn't show on flight radar.

Many decades ago, I was at a country pub one summer evening when I saw someone circle and land a Huey in a field next to the pub and stroll across to meet friends. It remains to this day, perhaps the coolest thing i've ever seen.smokin
