Posted on another thread, just wondered if the resident experts can say what they are doing?

What makes people think its an SAS choppa, looks more like a private one to me?

Worth noting im no helicopter expert and even though and ex infantry man neither am I a SF expert either, but would guess the use of Pumas, Merlins, Wild cats and Chinooks are the norm

Big thread on Pprune about this. Those in the know say it's SAS.

Yikes!

To the untrained eye, I'd say he was looking to put down in dangerous conditions.

But I know nothing about such things.

Army Air Corps rather than SAS, but still a Special Forces helicopter.

They'll have to re-paint it again now.

An identical one was spotted during the terror attack at London Bridge dropping off people so people have put 2 and 2 together and said it's an SF helicopter.

Whether it's the same one in the vid is unknown really but again, putting 2 and 2 together, it's doing something most civilian crews wouldn't so chances are it's the "SF" again.

Looks like a 658 Sqn dauphin, especially in that paint scheme. They have 8(?) I think? ZJ780-ZJ787.

If thats the case I'd suggest it has something to do with Police CT SFO's (Specialist Firearms Officers), these boys do a lot of training with SF. Most decent size forces wll have SFO's these days or provide them to a regional unit.

Pah, either way that's some ropey weather to be flying in!

A helicopter just like that in same colour scheme landed 30 mins ago on the helipad at Leeds General Infirmary. A couple of minutes later it took off.

They were closing the side door well after it had took off so assume not your usual air ambulance.

Military helicopters tend to stand out quite a lot in urban environments!

Agreed, but pretty much any form of helicopter stands out in an urban environment. Hence why they're not used for surveillance on the main land. There's an Apachi above London, Vauxhall area every now and then. However for the jobs the SF etc are trying to do I doubt there arent many civi heli's with the ability for fast roping etc - I could be wrong. Hear a helicopter and "eveyone" has a look to see if it's the Police one or the Air Ambulance as these are the main ones the majority of people would see unless living near a military garrison.

Isn't the fact it appears to be unmarked like the one in the above pic a bit of a giveaway?

Why Dauphins? What's special about them, other than their innocuousness?

I think they might have meant the fact it doesn't have: "Flying By Ian (Helicopter services)", or "Stephan's Aerial Surveys", written on it.

I'm no expert, but given the helicopter losses during the Falklands War in support of SF ops, I'd hope that they'd know better than to fly in such conditions. Surely the priority is to put the helicopter on the ground and wait it out, or fly around such weather? That said, maybe they were trying to put it on the ground safely when it was filmed...
