I’m looking to replace the engine, gearbox and propellor in my Dutch barge this summer and would appreciate any advice. The barge is 22 metres and 48 tonnes. The current engine is a 238 HP Detroit but I think one much smaller would be more suitable. Any advice?

I don't have any answers for you but know that as soon as those folk who do know see this they will ask what you use it for, how often, where etc. so best be prepared and update your question.

A Dutch barge with a full load of coal or pig iron is a whole different subject than the same barge puttering about at Henley On Thames.

What age is the barge?

I worked on a 38m 400 tonne Peniche in France that had a 6 cyl Detroit diesel, not certain of the HP but around 200 I think.

So what you've got sounds huge, unless you're planning to sail it back to Holland!

Is your Dutch barge on the Great Ouse/Cam perchance?

Not sure if this is any help but mine is half the size of yours (11m) and has a fairly old 4cyl diesel Isuzu engine circa 30BHP only IIRC, it poodles along and maneuvers quite nicely although bow thrusters are on my wishlist.

I would look for a medium speed diesel. Low revs and lots of torque, Kelvin, or Gardner would be my choice.

Exactually.

250hp at 3000 revis is no good as the application will need a very deep reduction.

I doubt anything in the 6 pot ltr a jug market is up to is.

Cummins QSC would be my starting point.

OP doesn't seem much interested in the answers.

Well I predict 80BHP @ 2800 RPM.
