AN 148 crash

Reports of an AN148 having crashed just south of Moscow with 71 on board.

Locals saying possible collision with a helicopter although nothing confirmed.

The 148 is a fairly new aircraft and this seems to be the first crash in service (a test aircraft was crashed during handover to the military - wing failed in flight).

Quite an unusual high wing design similar to the BAE146 along with similar name!

It evolved out of the An-74 transport but they chose the name "148" as a tribute to the British 146.

very strange circumstances - a lot of dis information going around. Will be interesting to know if this is terrorism, technical, or human error. Large Passenger planes don't just drop out of the sky from structural failures (excluding mountain wave effect (and mis understood fatigue issues back in the day))

Indeed if its anything like the 146 it will be built like a tank!

I don't think a 146 is built anything like a tank, and that still wouldn't help when plummeting to the ground anyway.

A mention was made on R4 yesterday that it might not have been de-iced before take off.

Why don't you think that?

Its design spec was to operate from unpaved and gravel strips and its proved itself to be a tough machine.

Cant comment on the 148 though, just looks similar!

There is no commonality between the two designs apart from the overall configuration.

One major difference but I am also sure structurally and systems wise there is nothing in common.

The Dornier 328Jet is actually similar too.
