I have been watching the programme Marvels Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D recently and the plane that they are travelling about in has 6 engines in a 4 under the main wings and 2 on the tailwings configuration

My question is would the rear engines actually be that worthwhile as it would just be sucking up the exhaust fumes from the two engines in front of it making it inefficient or would it be fine and produce as much power as one of the ones on front of it?

Not a great idea. Turbulence off the wing would be a pain as well :-(

I doubt it would go much faster for the extra weight and fuel required. CofG too far back as well IMHO.

If you want more engines put them on the wing.

I suspect at some stage we will see the reason for the rear pair of engines, perhaps a demountable twin engine aircraft on the rear or such......

Boeing looked at tailplane mounted engines for their 2707 supersonic project. They eventually switched to more conventional underwing engines before canning the whole effort -
