Costa Concordia may be moved by Dockwise Vanguard

I will start by saying I have ZERO knowledge and experience in ship salvage, but seems a strange move when they already have all the Caissons welded on to one side of the ship, and I assume they were already be in the process of manufacturing the caissons for the other side.

By the looks of the Dockwise Vanguard, the Concordia will need to be floated off the seabed anyway onto the deck of the Vanguard, so if they are having to float the entire vessel anyway why not just float it and tow it into the nearest dry dock with the capability to dismantle it?

Unless they are thinking they will take it to Asia/India to dismantle it? Again, making an assumption, but I would have thought there would be a trawl of the interior of the ship first for any salvageable passengers belongings etc?

Although it is without doubt a massive incident in terms of the loss of life, it is a fascinating topic seeing the salvage of the ship and I am looking forward to the (hopefully inevitable) documentaries on Discovery/NatGeo etc.

Could always lift it rather than technically refloat it? Would require some monster seaborne cranes, but no reason why its not possible. Certainly safer than towing it any distance.
