Lying in bed this morning, hearing the first electric train of the day, pull into and leave the station at the bottom of my road.
A nice sound I thought. Something mundane but good to hear.
Aircraft come over the house at about 1700 feet on the base leg to the local airport. A certain type of plane - probably an Airbus - makes a sort of sigh sometimes when it passes overhead. I guess it an airbrake, flap setting, or a cabin pressure thing.
Its just a nice sound.
On a plane theme, there is a certain kind of jet engine used today on airliners that makes a sort of ringing noise. Its a lovely sound of engineering.
The neighbour's Audi. A high performance Avant thing with Porsche connections I forget its name. A lovely sound when he gets it going or comes home late.
The sound of the guy next door's MGB is another example.

Re the HST 125s, being up in Lancs we never had them much our way when I was a kid but they seemed to operate on the cross country routes via Manchester to Blackpool about ten years ago. Love hearing them set off, you get the front loco doing its bit and then you get the double hit of the rear unit screaming away 20 seconds later!

I live just across from the Great Western Mainline, at night in the summer with the windows open you get the HST's all night, not particuarly interesting but from time to time you get the roar of a 37, you can hear it approaching a way off at full chat. Love it.
Even now we have the new Class 70's which are distinctive, sound very much like American locomotives, distinct whine from the generators

I don't know if any of you know the sound of an olympus gas turbine. They used to use them in Warships. HMS Illustrious is the only UK ship to still run them.
Derived from the Concorde and Vulcan engine, but because they are mounted deep in a ship, and exhaust through a funnel, its a wonderful muted roar. Like you can tell what it is, but its being held back. Its accompanied by a high pitched whistoe and a wonderful whine when they throttle up or down.
Maybe not an everyday noise.

Ooh, is it an RS2 Avant? That's the lovely I5 turbo engine, lovely when revved, especially if the centre box is on the way out. Like a quattro but with room in the back.Yes it does sound special.

I'm not a modern Audi fan, but I would love this. Its on a private reg, so I've no idea how old it is.

Dunno why, but triple engined boats running twin supercharged big block V8's does it for me.

Back when I was a kid in the 1950s; bedroom window wide open in summer - the early morning clink-clink-clink of milk bottles being filled in the dairy just up the hill from our house.
Edit - Ah, just re-read the title. OK, same time, same place - coal trucks being shunted at the local colliery (a couple of miles away, but the sound travelled).

I never tire of the start up noise from a turbine helicopter.

Its a sound soon to go, and I suppose its actually a sound of trouble for someone, but I love to hear the distant growl of a Sea King running along the coast at night. I live by the sea.
I've flown in so many SKs over the years. When I hear one, I just think of four blokes up there, doing their best, banter over the intercom etc.

Sadly mostly gone now from the HST fleet, though the MTU's don't sound too bad.Bah, had two of my favourites gone already. The Allison/RR 250s and Paxman Valenta (that's the engine the IC125 trains used).
None of the YouTube videos pick up all the sound of the Allison 250s, especially compared to being stood to the side of them on a Bo-105 on startup. Even better if you are sat inside and power it up, you can hear the gyros whine up to speed.

That and the smell of burnt Jet-A1, and its silly grin time. Even at my age.

With respect to cars, I'm a big fan of the old Ford BDA, but that might be regarded as exotic, so I'll say the Duratec V6. Preferably the 3.0, but the 2.5 is very similar.
