There was a rather scary picture on the front of Steam Railway magazine at the time.
The problem was the sheer speed of the spin. I think the Speedo finally seized up at 120mph or something crazy like that.
I also think that one of the bigger problems with the repair was that the wheel had turned on the axle during the slip. Knocking the wheels out of quarter.
The rods are a particularly difficult item to remake as the dimensions are so critical. To the point where one set of rods would be matched to the frames and wheels and those 3 bits would follow each other around for the life of the loco. everything else can be swapped during overhaul to get the loco out of the works quicker (for example tender and boilers were swapped around)
Rod replacements were actually a pretty rare event.

Yes slipping wheels are commonplace. but normally the steamchest only holds enough steam to spin them for a few moments before it exhausts the volume of steam downstream of the regulator.
The balancing act when starting a loco with a heavy train is to get the pressure of the steamchest as gigh as you can without spinning the wheels.
This was less of the problem on North Eastern loco's as they tended to be fitted with front end regulators.
The problem in this case was that the regulator jammed during the spin meaning they couldnt stop it. and a wheel turned on the axle causing the mess.
At least thats how I understand it. This is a foum so undoubtably someone knows better...
