Sometimes, the best security is the type that isn't in your face obvious. I've worked extensively with the US Military and was seconded to a unit abroad where the 2 star officer (very senior)'s security detail was several SUVs with your typical Oakley M-frame wearing individual in them and were very loud and obnoxious. The second in charge was a UK 1 star officer and his security was probably more efficient but very low key and you wouldn't know they were there unless they identified themselves. I'm not going to go into details of what it was other than say I managed to blag a spin in the security detail's armoured beemer and the ability of the driver (a Royal Marine) and the speed he was able to go was astonishing. I know which security detail would stand a better chance of surviving a contact...

Bit of thread resurrection but fully understand what you mean. I was driving through Kabul a few years ago and the American SUV's always used to travel at Mach 10, any part of the road, horns blazing (an accident waiting to happen which it did). As we came onto the Jalalabad Highway there was a commotion in the distance. Lots of people in the road looking decidedly dodgy. We decided to get closer as we couldnt turn around easy anyway. It turned out that one of these American convoys had hit full on a civilian cyclist on his pedal bike and killed him and a passenger. The bodies were in the back of a yellow run of the mill taxi, blood pouring out the back. The Americans were out surrounding their SUV's looking a bit trigger twitchy. The crowd were getting bigger and more vocal towards them. As we pulled up it was like parting of the waves and the crowd just moved aside and it seemed to go a little quieter and let us through. I was in charge and to be fair there was not point 4 of us getting out and trying to stop anything so we got on the radio and got some local Gurkha soldiers who we knew were in the area to come along. Apparently we found out they arrived and speaking the local dialect sorted everything out and im sure a bit of hefty compensation was paid. They dont do the hearts and minds bit well the Americans but that hasnt got through to them yet still.
