Happening this year in San Francisco - the Golden Gate Yacht Club against Kungliga Svenska Segelsällskapet. Oracle vs Artemis for short.

I did a PH search for this but found nothing although I seem to remember a thread from way back.

Anyway, anyone know when it starts?

For AC fans I just read a superb book on the 1983 AC called 'Born to Win' by the Aussie skipper John Bertrand. Excellent insight into the team psychology and mind-games that they used to win. If you had asked me, before reading the book, why the Aussies won, I would have said it had something to do with their winged keel, which means that I fell into the same trap that Dennis Connor and the New York Yacht Club did.

Regarding the NYYC, have they ever tried seriously to win the cup back?

Won't necessarily be Artemis. They'll battle it out for the Louis Vuitton Cup against Emirates New Zealand, Luna Rossa and Team Korea in July/August, with the winner taking on Oracle in San Francisco at the beginning on September - If the boats all stay together long enough!

Yeah, Artemis are just the challenger on record. Which is some weird yachting system.

The NZ Team down here are talking it up like we're the only competition.

The boats are impressive catenmearangues smile Which have 'foils' lifting them out of the water meaning they can travel faster than the wind when reaching...

I beleieve it was the Kiwis who largely spoiled the America's Cup by entering the massive 90 foot KZ1 in the 1988 race, causing the Dennis Connor to enter a catamaran and it has all gone tits from there. Bring back the 12 metres! Or at least monohulls. Multis are just dragsters and can't tack fast, so no close tacking duels and covering battles.

Just under 8 and a half hours left bounce

[quote]On Saturday afternoon Luna Rossa Challenge 2013 issued a press release stating it will not race its first scheduled match of the Louis Vuitton Cup, the America’s Cup Challenger Series, tomorrow against Emirates Team New Zealand.

“This isn’t unexpected, but it’s still disappointing,” said Stephen Barclay, the CEO of the America’s Cup. “It’s a case of won’t race, not can’t race.

“The people really hurt by this are the fans, who have waited for more than two years to see the first race in these spectacular AC72 catamarans.

“This is particularly disappointing considering Luna Rossa was out sailing on the race course on Saturday,” said Barclay.

The Luna Rossa statement reads: “As already informally stated in the last few days, Luna Rossa is waiting for the International Jury decision on its protest against the measures introduced by the Regatta Director.”

“What I don’t understand is they sailed today (Saturday), they say they will sail if they win or lose the protest, but they just won’t sail against Emirates Team New Zealand on Sunday,” Barclay said.

Emirates Team New Zealand will need to start the race on Sunday at 12:15 pm PT and sail the course to collect the first point in the Louis Vuitton Cup.

At Friday’s press conference, Kiwi skipper Dean Barker confirmed his team “will be out there, ready to race.”

Watching Team New Zealand foiling at nearly 40knots right on the edge of capsizing was incredible.

The jibing was real heart in mouth stuff, scary nose dips, massive spray, crew trampolining side to side.

In perfect conditions these things will be racing at over 50mph, beats the monohulls hands down for me.

First off you need 2 boats out there to race. The other problem is that if conditions aren't perfect they won't go out.

As ever the America's Cup is shown up to be a farce.

Just go back to 12m monos which can actually race.

So will they have a token 'race' with one boat, or declare the one remaining boat winner by default and give it a trophy, or scrap the event? That is what the other lot would wish I expect.

"But while their numbers might be impressive, the start to this AC34 cycle can only be described as a disaster. Earlier in the week the parade of sail and speed sailing trials that were to open the summer of sailing, as it has been billed, had to be cancelled as there was too much wind. This event was a replacement for the fleet racing that was originally planned but a few months ago it became clear that fleet racing four high powered 72ft cats would be too risky. The parade of sail was seen as a safer way of revelling the teams to the public.

Yet for all the shock and drama of the Italian's eleventh hour announcement, their no show was no surprise to those in the know in San Francisco. For weeks the talk around the docks has been about whether either of the teams would race during July, particularly now Artemis is out of the picture until August as they recover from their accident. The reason is that winning the round robin stage of the competition, that lasts the whole of July, only gets you straight to the final. With two boats in the fleet, both are already there so why risk damaging your boat in breeziest conditions of the summer, especially when you are still developing it?

In a local news report Oracle CEO Russell Coutts was quoted as calling the team, ‘a bunch of spoiled little rich kids dressed in Prada.'
Sirena's response was that Coutts was way richer than him.

Can't see this making Sailing a major spectator event.

Yes - there's no question it's been a disaster. I think the the arrogance of Coutts & Ellison and their lack of appreciation of the commercial environment facing many sponsors has been the cause of this embarrassment.

As an admittedly biased Kiwi, I'd like to see ETNZ win the cup & return it to a place of sanity with less costly boats, many more competitors and a genuinely level playing field. It needs to be a internationally inclusive festival of sailing with the widest possible involvement with a strong base of national support behind the competitors.

Coutts & Ellison have turned what used to be an elegant but admittedly rarified minor sporting spectacle into a crass commercial and sporting failure.
