Has an aeroplane ever crashed in your locality?

Got talking to a colleague at work and realised that I had nearly forgotten about this happening in my local village years ago (Harrier crash):

Thankfully, nobody was hurt. I was 13 at the time and lived less than a mile from the scene.

Has anyone else had an incident like this local to them?

I was watching a small light aircraft 8 weeks ago or so, when I hear a bang followed by total engine silence and some banking one way the other before it disappeared out of sight, at around 1500 feet I'd guess. Nothing in the local news, I rang the nearest airfield which knew nothing of the incident either. No news online. Very strange. I can only guess it didn't crash, but it was rather odd.

Yes.

A light plane crashed at Newmarket, killing the pilot and injuring a jockey who never flies in light planes anymore. Helicopters yes. Planes no.

Couple of planes crashed at Duxford.
A model aircraft crashed there and set the field on fire and it shut the M11.

An ex Upper Heyford USAF F1-11 crashed on Finmere airfield about 20 years ago. Almost landed on the Dalgety seed processing plant and office block - destryed every car in the car park and blew out the windows of the offices. No -one badly hurt IIRC.

Saw a Spitfire crash at Woodford airshow a fair while back.. That's about it.

I used to fly model aircraft within 100 or so yards from an active runway, seen a few over the years. One landed two thirds of the way down a wet runway and proceeded to slide til he went off the end. Stoved in his landing gear. A similar one but landing in the opposite direction, just disappeared in a cloud of dust as he shot into the field at the end of the runway.
Another one was a microlight had just taken off, turned downwind but didn't have enough airspeed, just plummeted to the ground from about 50 metres. Both occupants escaped with minor injuries.

There have also been at least three fatalaties at the same airfield, though thankfully I didn't witness these.

They seem to fall out of the sky on a regular basis around here, don't have the time to find all the links but lots of small stuff has crashed around the Salisbury area in the last couple of years.

Korean Air Cargo Flight 8509, 1998 or 99, I worked at Stansted at the time. Cargo 747 pretty much fell out the sky after taking off. Cue closed airport and all staff doing a fingertip search of the taxiway and runway.

Not an aeroplane, but a helicopter crashed at the beginning of the year just outside our village, co-incidentally at what used to be a WW2 airfield. Some sort of mechanical failure was the cause, I think. I didn't see it happen, thankfully.

I used to live within a stones throw of the RAE and in my youth every spare moment was spent watching the aircraft.

The crash I remember most vividly was the Sikorsky Black Hawk. I was stood at the perimiter fence watching it practice for the 1974 air show. The pilot attempted a roll-over at low altitude and it plunged in to the ground. I knew immediately that I'd just witnessed a couple of deaths. I was 12 at the time and it was my first real awareness of mortality

I saw the aftermath of the Trident crash at Staines. The only crash I witnessed was the Firefly crash at Duxford a few years back. I was filming the flight and didn't realise how close to the ground it was until it hit. Tape duely handed into the AIB tent for the investigation, and had it returned a few months later. I still haven't edited or even watched what I had filmed as an old friend from my time in the FAA was in the back seat, and didn't survive.

We had a plane lose it's windscreen which landed in a field not far from my house in 1990. Quite a dramatic incident by all accounts see here particularly the bit about the captain flying out of the windscreen and the flight attendant grabbing his belt!

More of an incident than a crash though.

A Stuka crashed a few feet from one of our properties on the south coast.

I live within 10 miles of Manchester Airport - and there have been several instances of aircraft coming down (or in some cases, not getting off the ground) here.

One in the 60's took the roof off the house at the end of the runway, and another I remember was the Airtours fire on take off.

Also remember the Spitfire crashing at Woodford, the plane hitting the houses on take off from Barton a year or so back, and a mustang planting itself in the fields around Barton at an airshow many years ago.
