This summer I have been able to introduce my daughter to the delights of dinghy racing, she is really enjoying it but recently complaining of cold hands.

I need to get her some sailing gloves otherwise there will be a mutiny.

Its a long time since I bought sailing gloves, but I recall buying some neoprene gloves when I used to sail all year (a long while ago, which were warm but fell apart very quickly one exposed to the rigours of dinghy sailing.

Any tips regarding decent gloves available these days?

Not much has changed, I manage to shred a pair every couple of months, bu they're only £15(ish) so just put up with the cost as part of the fun.

Also means I can switch between, fingerless, half finger and full finger as the seasons change.

Make sure the gloves have leather palms at least Its not just about warmth its about better grip on the lines and protection from rope burns.

got some Gill long fingered this afternoon. Looked at neoprene but they seemed a bit cumbersome for dinghy sailing

Gil tend to be the ones that I use (nice hefty discounts wink )

They do some others which I'm eying up for the winter, they look like 'warehouse' gloves (crap description I know) but they're light blue with grey non slip palms a finger.

Not thinking of them for warmth really as I rarely get cold (fleece onesie + dry suit = toasty me with or without gloves)

Oh yes, saw those, not sure abaout em

Years ago I used to use woollen gloves from B&Q they had rubber knobbles on, which were pretty good, but when wet they would get a bit baggy, and catch on things

Gill strike a good balance between quality and price. I treated myself to some megabucks Harken gloves once and they were no better.

Was running late this morning, so dived into the shop, threw on my dry suit (over jeans) and grabbed a pair off the rack...... Seem really quite good, really really really grippy, seemed to dry quickly without sagging when they got wet.

I use "warehouse" gloves on my Moth and 49er. However even the gloves allegedly made by sailing gear manufacturers don't last...the only ones that last (and that's by a massive margin) are the Showa ones, available on eBay for a good price. However they aren't that warm for winter sailing...the full finger Gill ones seem best for the really cold weather.

I'm guessing, but don't think I've seen you out for a few weeks!

Are you getting to grips with the Moth now?

Getting there. Had one really great day, controlled flight and only 3 capsizes in 3 hours, and then the next time was the day of the Laser open which was a disaster (as you no doubt saw!). Partly lack of talent, but also damage to the main flap. Foil currently at home being fixed, and a new adjustable wand on the way which will give much more control over the ride height. I'll get there...might even give you a go once I've sorted the niggles out!
