The Royal Navy in the First World War

Old Weather started as a project to manually transcribe weather observations written on over 1 million pages of old Royal Navy logbooks in the National Archives. One side-benefit of the project is that the process of collecting the weather data also gave them the positions of ships. These positions have been mapped to create a time-based visualisation of where Royal Navy warships (at least the ones whose logbook survived) patrolled in peace and wartime. We can see the pre/post-war trade routes, the North Sea blockades and the introduction of convoy escorts. If you zoom in, we can even see the Gallipoli campaign, ships transiting the Panama Canal and research trips up Chinese rivers. Very hypnotic.

That's pretty cool. There are some random appearances though. Must have taken some time obviously. Kind of like the nuclear explosion one.
