They did the same over Gloucester for some reason a few weeks ago. Very low, very fast, lots of white smoke everywhere.

No idea why as there were no events on anywhere local that day.

Glad that they did though as it was a wonderful sight. My seven year old saw them & said, simply, awesome. Which is more or less what he said last week when they displayed at Dartmouth Regatta.

The Reds usually transit at low-ish level to and from displays so that people can see them en-route. If they are passing a built-up area they'll often give it some smoke on the way through. The Reds will often adjust their track slightly to flypast village fetes etc if the event is already on their planned route and has been an approved request. The Vulcan also transits at 2000' or so; this hasn't done the fatigue index much good, however, but '558 is Visual Flight Rules only and has to stay out of cloud.

Red Arrows formation transit flights are fairly regular at this time of the year and usually Notam'd. Check somewhere like this http://metutil.appspot.com/static/maps/48HourWarni...

Remember the times quoted are Zulu (GMT) so an hour later than BST.

Thank you for wasting an hour of my time! Quite interesting, but I guess its easier to look on the website of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight to see where they are going! biggrin

An hour, what were you doing?

It takes 5 seconds to click to the link, then 5 seconds to click the disclaimer, then 5 seconds to click Formation Flights (or whatever else you might be looking for). This tells you when and where they will be transitting.

I use it to reference other Notams each day, but rarely spend more than 2 minutes on the site.

Of course, it only covers the next 48 hr period.

Append ?nosplash=y to the end of your bookmarked URL to never see the disclaimer again

If you want to generate an ad-hoc NOTAM briefing from the NATS portal, and still get a map, you can use the Google Chrome Extension.

Sorry my wording was a bit ambiguous.

I only mentioned it because a friend saw the site, went off with his kids to view the Red Arrows at the designated 15.50 (UTC) and then complained that they didn't arrive until an hour later rolleyes

And I guess the site should show the fly past over Central London today by the Red Arrows, a Typhoon (or more), and the BA Jet that brough the Olympic Flame to the UK.

They just zipped straight over my flat in Cockfosters. I heard them but was too late to see them. I got to the window to see white smoke trails dissipating over my building.

Dammit!

hehe

ETA: It may have been the Typhon?
