Blimey, we're really going minimalist with this one. Nice bow though.

"medium calibre gun" - is that just one then?

Has the complement of missiles in the on board "silo" meant that guns on ships are a bit pointless/obsolete. now.

The reload system is much quicker, the targeting is much better, and the shells are more powerful - it does the work that multiple guns would have in the past.

I know missiles have their advantages, but a broadside of 16" guns is infinitely more satisfying than something that goes 'Fwit'.

HMS Rodney softens up Johnny Foreigner with of nine of them:

While impressive the big guns had pretty poor accuracy, took up a lot of room had a slow rate of fire and needed constant maintenance. A modern medium calibre that can fire 40 times a minute would pepper a old battleship while it was still loading its first volley.

May not to much against old school armour though.

As a non ship type person, what the difference between this and the same looking ships that have just come into service ? Is this their replacement already ?

They're smaller. The type 45 is purely a destroyer, whilst the type 26 would be more in line with the type 23 (frigate).

In terms of tonnage, just over half the size, 8000 vs 5400(est)

Concept started in the '90s, signed off in 2010, in service in 2020. Is that a normal time for concept to service?

Don't you now have a problem of redundancy. Have 2 guns, one breaks, you still have a gun. With a single gun, if it's out of commission things get awkward.

Type 45-

Anti air mainly
tiny bit of anti ship

Type 26-

Anti ship and anti sub mainly
bit of anti-air

The black swan concept could also be quite interesting in future years too.

That's quite rapid for defence procurement, if past performance is anything to go by it'll be at least 5 years late and the budget with have trebled. furious

Seems they haven't learnt from history plus what happens if the one all singing all dancing gun is disabled?

Depends how much the government interfere, I don't have the numbers to hand but the price increases and delays in the carriers that the government are purely responsible for are shocking.

minister - 'if we delay ordering this item until next year, it will save £500!'
builders - 'but we need that bit to continue'
minister - 'even better, if you aren't doing anything for a year that saves a fortune!'
builders - 'no we still have to keep the yard employed or we lose the ability to build anything'
minister - 'shut up iam a financial genius'

[1 year later]

minister - 'time to order that bit I suppose'
supplier - 'yep that will be £600'
minister - 'what, why? it was £500!'
supplier - 'last year yes, but you cancelling half the fleet has cut orders too much for us to survive'
minister - 'this is unexceptable, everything stops for a year while we carry out a hearing to establish the navies guilt in poor project keeping'

If the target is less than a mile away, the 30mm guns, or miniguns, if the target is more than a mile away, an Aster 15 missile.

That's a T45 I'm talking about, not sure about T26, although it will have more than just one gun onboard.
The aster currently has no anti ground/ ship ability, so if the main gun is took out on a 45 and you have a surface threat coming at you, just hope the engines are ready to run away.

That mucked up my speech mark formatting so I stuck with same length titles.

Back on topic- Here's to hoping the government don't grandly bugger up this time, the 45's are going to be worn out far faster then hoped as each is doing its best to fly fag with only half dozen spread around the globe, if the gov want the RN to stay a global power then they cant keep cutting classes down to half dozen ships.

Not used by the UK as far as I know, but modern weapons systems and ammunition are very effective

I believe its built under licence by BAE, the RN prefer the 4.5 which has twice the range and powerful hit over the small 110 naval gun. A 155mm (6.1in) gun is currently being developed which could be a fair step up.

Who says the gov want us to have any capability anywhere?

They've shown bugger all inclination to date
