I live in the flight path to the east of Manchester aiport and I see planes heading towards Manchester airport all day every day, every now and then we get them taking off in our direction too.

But all day yesterday there was a small plane coming away from the airport in a zig zag fashion and doing on giant circular around my area whilst maintaining this zig zag flight.

It was a small plane, not normally what you would see in the area, smaller planes taking off from Manchester airport tend to turn off before they get into the area and even smaller planes tend to take off from Manchester City Airport.

Any ideas what it could be? I couldnt find it on flightradar24 and heard nothing from them on the scanner.

Could have been the EA (Environment Agency) - sounds like the kind of flying they do . . . all day!

Once upon a time in lucky past, I got to visit the Manchester ATC centre, I enquired about a flightpath similar to how you described it, and it was a plane doing a survey. They take photos of an area in set pattern and match them up.

I was a surveyor at the time, and this was new to me, but we ended up doing an aerial survey in the future.

What it this police plane? It's used to monitor communications and for general support duties.

It looked just like that plane, yes!! the next day the police helicopter was hovering above. I didn't think it was related but it must be! maybe looking for cannabis farms? Loads have been found round here.

Could be - they've had a modification approved which replaces the FLIR camera pod with an air-intake unit which slows the airstream down, and they fit a drugs sniffer dog in the nose compartment. Might explain the erratic track you saw being flown.
