Just seen this on the front page of the telegraph, apparently the planes are in transport crates "They were waxed, wrapped in grease proof paper and their joints tarred".

It would be fantastic to see these all rebuilt and working!

More here.

Great news!

Not such a great bit of reporting though, every time I read the word Jet I cringed!

Eta. Beaten to it. I hope it does go ahead. Could make a fascinating program.

"Mr Cundall said the government had promised him it would be making no claim on the aircraft, of which 21,000 were originally produced, and that he would be entitled to a share in them.

“It’s been a financial nightmare but hopefully I’ll get my money back,” he said."

Sure this isn't Camerons way of expanding the Air Force cheaply?

Would be good if true. Part of me thinks it's a bit too good though. Can't help but think someone will have know the location and have dug them up years ago for scrap, or that they were not buried intact, but rather crushed and dumped into the ground. No one more than me though wish it were true story though.

Sounds incredible. Plenty of work for someone. Bad news for anyone thinking of selling theirs! Why doesn't the Govt have any claim? I assume we paid for them back then. Give the farmer the best one for his troubles and keep a couple for BBMF. Auction the rest for some good cause(s).

Well Victoria Ward seems to have been duly reprimanded but we still see 'Spitfire aircrafts'

Aircrafts???

I bet she has an A* in English too. For being able to write 'V Ward'.

This all seems to good to be true.

What will this do to the value of existing Spit's? Should I break open the piggy bank for the clipped wing mk 5

Which bit of that is incorrect? It's onnly a quote from the public, not the Oxford University Sentence Constructing Championships smile
well, we're taking the piss out of a very badly written article, so I thought I'd join in

Spitfires are beautiful aeroplanes or the Spitfire is a beautiful aeroplane

wink

I really hope not, but in reality those things will be crushed up dust by now in that climate, especially as they are underground. There would have been no finesse in their disposal. Just look at a lot of well sealed time capsules that get unearthed, the contents are nearly always shot.

The chemical site in South Wales that I used to work on was actually a US storage depot in the 2nd world war. As soon as the Yanks pulled out after the war the place was rapidly decommisioned.

Locals remember Sherman tanks without turrets fitted being driven into the nearby salt reclamation pits, and brand new crated Harley davidson disptach bikes also being pushed in, as well as tons of live ammo. They were then covered over with hardcore from the bomb sites.

Its all still there, well bits of it, whenever a new build estate gets constructed close by they always unearth all sorts, the last one found a load of rusty machine guns.

That's a very strange article, no mention of Mr Cundall and the fact they havn't located them yet but on the telegraph article he has.
