What would this have been doing

The Lynxes and Pumas are out playing at the moment, and about 30 seconds ago two Lynxes just flew over my office.
What was odd was about 20-30 wingspans away, off the starboard side of the lead Lynx, was civilian looking low winged single prop light aircraft in white, matching the lead Lynx's turns and altitude changes exactly.
Any ideas what they might have been doing?
ETA They've just flown back over and now the lead Lynx is chasing the plane.

That does like very much like the plane I saw - too far off to see the roundels though. But they fly over a hell of a lot, as Dishforth is close by, and I've never seen them with a plane escort though.
Perhaps it was intercept practice for the Olympics. A Lynx would probably make a much better platform for intercepting light aircraft straying into the Olympics Airspace. Faster than most light aircraft yet slow enough to stay with them, even nimbler and a couple of shots from the M3M .50 cal (or even GPMG) would be a bit tidier than the 27mm cannon or missiles from a Typhoon.

Saw exactly this above Malton this afternoon between 12 and 3.What was odd was about 20-30 wingspans away, off the starboard side of the lead Lynx, was civilian looking low winged single prop light aircraft in white, matching the lead Lynx's turns and altitude changes exactly.
