Old Train At Brighton Station

I've noticed twice that there's an old diesel - I think - train near Brighton Station. I would like to know what it's doing there as I haven't seen it move, or doing anything. It's short and dark green in colour. I'm wondering if any pher's know anything about it.

While that's a rather vague description, it sounds like one of those diesel shunting engines that have been around (as far as I know, and I'm not a 'spotter') since the 1960s.

Does it look a bit like a small steam engine, with three wheels each side?

Nope it's on the track.

TTwiggy- It doesn't look like a steam train, but I do think it's a shunter having done some looking on the net.

Cab at one end, sounds like either a Class 08 or 09. Connecting rods are often painted yellow.

I think Southern have/borrow one for moving stock around. I believe some of the sidings are unpowered.

It's an 0-6-0 diesel shunter - my train set had one

Dont think it belongs to southern, certainly not brighton depot, although i think i have seen one up at Selhurst.
Its just a diesel shunter, for moving stock that either has no power, or cant take power and they have no other units to help.
They are quite pokey too, around 500bhp i think, and a bucket load of torgue to boot!

I think they sometimes use a shunter on passenger specials down that neck of the woods for a small part of the route.

I always look at whats in at Selhurst when we pass, mainly in the hope of finding some new Class 171s! Not seen a shunter in Selhurst, do get a few unusal visitors in there including a First Great Western DMU last week.

It's a Super Gronk! Class 09 has a max speed of around 30mph.
