Parallel Universes.

A theory is that there are an infinite number of these in existence and that what we thought of the big bang being unique is happening and has happened and will happen countless times and really is insignificant in the multiverse theory.

Question I have is - assuming the theory of multiverse is correct what are these universes in? My thinking is outside of our universe is nothing yet the universe is expanding into this nothing however if there are many universes then they must exist in something.

Plus wouldn't there be a gravitational pull between the universes so even if a universe is fixed somehow in position the stars and galaxies within would cause them to drift towards the other universe.

Lastly what would happen if two universes collided just like galaxies?? Could there be fundamental differences in the physical laws if so what would happen. Or would it be the case of the laws of what contains the universes then those fundamental rules apply.

The only thing we can be sure of is that Gene Vincent will be along in a moment or two, and that all will become clear after 100 pages of scintillating discussion .......

The other universes inhabit the same space and time we do. Otherwise quantum mechanics is broken.

So space is the voids between the universes?

I guess you're watching National Geographic as well?? hehe

All the multiple universes inhabit the same area of space time that we do, so as you're sitting at home posting on here there'll be numerous versions of you sitting there at the same point doing the same thing, only in different dimensions. There's no space between them as such because they're right here around us.

There may be other universes out beyond the boundary of our universe but it's unlikely we'll ever know. For all we know there could be as many universes out there as there are galaxies in our universe.

I think the most commonly held theory suggests that the other universes (13 iirc) exist as "skins" or "layers" completely enveloping our universe, but seperated by a infinitesimally small distance. Because the space inside atoms is mostly, er, space, the idea is that the extra universes can actually exist intermeshed with ours.........

Guilty as charged

In theory then there could be many multiverses which are contained in let's call it a glob of which there could be countless other globs all contained in let's call it a lesbos etc etc etc.
I'm not religious but it does make you think maybe we only exist through the choice of something choosing to run an experiment
Also doesn't it all make you feel so so insignificant going about your life whatever you will achieve it's pointless would be forgotten about after a generation. However tale some evil individual Stalin hitler etc they will be remembered for all of our time ... Seems so wrong maybe that's why they did it to have imortalality of some kind

I thought those were he other dimensions rather than universes that are needed to make string theory work... but I'm thick so probably wrong.

Erm, mods, why is this in Boats Trains and Planes? This is Lounge material. The only dispute I would have is that this is a late night conversation with which to scramble ones noodle, not mid afternoon sensible discourse! hehe

In a parallel universe, it IS in The Lounge.

And in another parallel universe PH has a science sub-forum...

They put the science stuff in here along with any other interesting stuff to keep it away from the torent of drivel that is the lounge.
I had heard that they will be shortly renaming this part "Interesting stuff"
and renaming the Lounge "Relationship problems for hipocrites and dating problems for fkwits"

(Here's hoping)

Here we seem to be on the horns of a dilemma.

But maybe in a (one of them) parallel universe it's slipped back and is hanging on its tail.

I do like getting these sciencey technically non motoring things here myself Trace purrups we should ask mods to tack Space/Science on the heading.

I love the sound of RR Merlins of course but I'm also a SciFi freak too
