Spotted by an acquaintance in a field in Surrey. Looking a bit sorry for itself but I can't work out what it is. Someone on here (probably Eric) will know.

Looks a bit like a Sopwith Strutter. I don't think it is though.

Even though it's in WW1 RFC colours, it certainly looks a bit more modern (1920s/30s) than that, particularly the undercarriage arrangement and the radial engine.

Looks like the wings are directly in line, while the strutter has them staggered.

She reckons it's recently moved, Google Maps shows it here

But it's now in the SE corner of the field to the SW.

ETA: The wing arrangement and undercarriage has thrown me, undercarriage looks more modern but wings inline tended to be a WW1 era thing didn't it?

I thought it looked Avro Tutor-esque at first, but it's unlikely that any genuine aircraft of that age and condition would be left outside.

Doesn't look real to me: 3x2 rear spar in the upper wing?

Undercarriage and ailerons look about right, as do to the struts and dihedral, and it's difficult to tell how much stagger there is from the pictures.

Looking at wikipedia the wing structure looks about right too:

That's a weird version of the DH60. It has an "upside down" engine. The vast bulk of DH60 Moths had the cylinder head, tappets, rockers etc on the top. It looks like a cross between a DH60 Moth and a DH89 Tiger Moth.

I too think the subject looks slightly post-WW1, but if it was a film prop wouldn't they make it resemble something real?

It's Swiss, and Swiss and Germans are quite similar (apart from fondness for invading countries) and Germans liked to put engines upside down.

No way is it a strutter, note the V shape of the fuselage to upper wing struts on the strutter, compared the vertical struts on the Unidentified Grounded Object and the moths above.

So it's a replica of a Salmson 2 which was a kind of copy of a Sopwith Strutter but this aircraft has been modified and painted to look like a Sopwith Strutter?
