Well sort of. We now have the ability to disguise our tanks as other objects. Still a long way from Star Trek, and still visible to the naked eye, but it's a start I guess!

In Japan I think i read somewhere that they have already have a prototype of a cloaking suit. Much like in Harry Potter's invisibility cloak. It takes pictures from behind and puts up the images in the front side of the device. Also, have you watched the earlier installment of GI Joe, the have that suit in there.

I never realised there was a Mrs B.J smegma in that.
The thing I noticed was all the demos show only silhouette camouflage (from the side/front) of the vehicle, which isn't much use against aerial attackers, who look down on the target vehicle, such as UCAVs which they make a point of showing in the film.
I also wondered exactly how useful it would be in naval applications as camouflaging a destroyer as a day cruiser is going to be hard seen with thermal imagers since there would be a F-off great big wake behind it, which would be odd.

I imagine the system will be of use in fooling radar/ir guided missile systems.
not so convinced in its use against a guy with a shoulder or vehicle launched
wire guided device or abdul with an rpg or as has been pointed out up the page
all the tech you can muster is no use if you roll over an ied or a pukka mine.
Unless we are thinking of having a large scale war china/us for example

are so WW2?

I don't believe it's an attempt to spoof IR missiles or anything like that. It's as simple as just trying to blend into it's surroundings so it get disregarded - much like any other kind of camouflage. As you say, the days of tanks being deployed out in the open battling other tanks are probably over (at least for a while). This technology will be of more use in an urban environment - think Iraq / Afghanistan, night time, lots of normal vehicle activity and you want to position your APC / tank/ etc and try and make it blend in by looking like a pickup truck for example. Ultimately it doesn't "cloak" the vehicle as such but I think a lot of technologies such as these are just buying time, or gaining every little advantage they can.
