125th anniversary of the RNLI's biggest disaster

Just noticed that last Friday was the 125th anniversary when 27 of the 29 crew from the St. Annes and Southport lifeboats died.

3 boats went to the assistance of the German boat Mexico. The Lytham lifeboat managed to save the 12 crew of the Mexico, but both the St. Annes and Southport lifeboats capsized with the lose of 14 of the 16 crew from Southport and all 13 from St. Annes

when we were walking the coast from penzance to mousehole we found the memorial garden and the old lifeboat house very moving as we knew nothing of the disaster until that point.

Apart from always living close to the sea and now living on an island in the middle of the Irish Sea I have little connection to the sea or sailing but I have maximum respect of the RNLI. These guys voluntarily go out to sea to help people when the weather is so bad that most of us wouldn't even leave the house.

These volunteers deserve more respect than they get.

That was utterly chilling.

I'd heard of this disaster but the details had passed me by. Only got to see the second half of the documentary by channel-hopping last night.

What bloody brave men, how desperately sad.

Worth noting, I think, that Southport no longer has an RNLI-funded lifeboat
