Tell you what though - whoever calculated how high above the sea bed the rigs needed to sit did a pretty much perfect job!

Watched a video at a recruitment thing at Rosyth many moons ago about the offshore life.
Was very interesting when the waves came up through the deck grating on the drilling level.

Looks like all of a sudden there wasn't enough room for the water in the North Sea so it all had to bunch up to make space

And I am working on a small boat (MV Seabed Worker) alongside Ekofisk though we did run for shelter for 48 hours!

Stuff like that genuinely scares me! And I've always wondered how they withstands abuse like that, to me it's like sitting on a bar stool... very top heavy and therefore doesn't take much to be pushed over. I couldn't do it, fair play to those who do. A mate is a scaffolder on the rigs, some of the stories he comes back with... fook that!

Its very rare to get a wave reach the superstructure, the rigs are designed to sit at a high in which the highest of waves still don’t reach, also there isn’t much force from the waves against the structure, as the jacket legs absorb what little force there is from the waves/sea.

I think I heard on the radio earlier today that the largest wave ever to hit the northern Irish coast was recorded today or yesterday - twenty something metres high... It's a bit choppy out there at the moment!

I was onboard when this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfNhHQDMCXI happened (skip to 3:10) a couple of weeks ago - the helideck just out of shot on the top right is 34m up...

Apparently the rig got hit by a 31m wave that day - the heave made going up and down stairs interesting - going from weighing 35ish kg to 105ish kg Sleeping was nigh on impossible - if the movement trying to chuck you out of bed didn't wake you up, then the thrusters rattling your filling out would.
