Plane /train spotters..

Can I also nominate bus spotters - serious weirdos!
I'm an IT contractor and once worked for Stagecoach in Stockport. I used to keep backup tapes in a safe in the bus repair workshop in the parts dept. One day I was in there and next thing all the fitters and staff are doing a runner - one bloke vaulted over the counter and into the stores
WTF? asks I. Turns out a bus spotter had wandered in from the street through the big entrance doors. Evidently they are seriously odd. So I'm peering out from behind a door and in wanders this seriously geeky dweeby bloke - it was ten years ago now so I can't remember the exact details but he was wearing massive thick rimmed specs and carrying a notepad and had beige "slacks" on. He just wanders into the building and starts writing stuff down and looking at crashed/broken buses. Nobody would go near him
Very funny indeed.

or what about those racing car spotters. They pay serious money (£100 plus!!!!) to sit in a grandstand all day just to see some cars go round in circles for an hour or so, then they go home.
And they could have watched the same cars going round in circles on TV!!! Madness
What a waste of time and money! And lets not even start about travelling all over the country to hero-worship young men in shorts running around. The same young men in shorts they see running around a field every week during the winter. All they do is chase a ball, fall over, or cuddle... and you love it!!
Horses for corses. I'd glad people like train spotters exist, they are part of the fabric of life and its the diversir which makes life interesting. And I'd rather spend time in their company talking about our relative passions then with some of the posters above, who are like, OMG its so uncool to have an interest or hobby which isnt fashionable...

Yeah they are really weird. I've seen bus spotters almost getting themselves run down so they can take photos. Just the other day, I saw some bloke with a notepad and some seriously expensive looking DSLR on a tripod taking pictures of the buses coming out of the station and writing stuff down as they went. Weird beardy type with dodgy clothes and glasses. OK I suppose they aren't harming anyone, but really, its just well weird.I'm an IT contractor and once worked for Stagecoach in Stockport. That isn't a fixed situation, and they aren't just watching to tick off what cars they have seen, they are at a large gathering, a social event and watching the ACTION, the unpredictable action with endless possibilities. And they could have watched the same cars going round in circles on TV!!! A train spotter is stood on a bridge watching a train go past.
It's not an interest or hobby that is uncool, its a pastime that shows they have absolutely no social life, and are becoming further separated from society, which is disturbing!

Excuse me but we have a 300+ page 'bad parking' thread and a 'Supercar spotted' thread.
How is that any different?
Because the contributors to those threads just happen to see those things as we go about our daily lives, we don't hang around carparks hoping to see bad parking. How is that any different?

I don't mind them doing that as it is their interest, just like train/plane/bus spotting is someone elses intrest.

Give me a good growler (class 37) any day over a plane. In fact the nuclear waste train past me only half an hour ago being pulled by one.
That same train, or another Direct Rail nuclear waste hauler comes past my office sometimes, I always wondered what those trains were, they do make quite a nice racket! My dad used to be a plane spotter, had loads of books full of aircraft serial numbers, and after dragging me or my brother out for a day parked at the top of a multi-story outside Heathrow, he would come home and cross off all the planes he'd seen.
I'm not quite sure what he got from it all, lots of books with crossed off serial numbers? Each to their own though.

Check the Supercar thread again. There are people in there that actually go with DSLRs in to London to take pictures of cars. They aren't just chance encounters.
I don't visit the supercar thread, I'm not going to try and defend that nonsense. Still, my point stands on the bad parking thread, it's a world removed from standing on a railway platform for hours on end looking at the same trains they saw last week.
