Has anyone got a decent inverter that is quiet? Ours is not that noisy but the fan is always running & when you are on the boat is a drone in the background . We have 4 batteries so no problem with power. I could put one in the engine bay but it would need a remote on off when needed. Any suggestions will be very welcome thanks.

Nice bit of Black Country boating there.
Did you have any problems with the lack of depth at Titford pools?
Thanks.

We didn't go into the pools, just up to the bridge by Aldi/Asda because we thought it might be very shallow!

The pools were dredged a few years ago so you wouldn't have had a problem.

I have always used Victron but I think you have to check why the heat is accumulating and causing the fan to run in the first place .

I thought all invertors ran with fans going as they had to get rid of the heat they were generating ?

Victron obviously has a name for itself now but does seem pricey.

What power range are you talking about ?

I want 1000w minimum to run the microwave, we have 4 large batteries so that should be OK. I think I might have to put the inverter in the engine bay, I have a battery charger in there that the fan is on most of the time and you cant hear that in the boat so might be the best bet.

I think you may need to ask yourself do you really need the microwave?

A mistake a lot of people make is to treat the boat the same as a house with the same appliances and find that they hit upon issues with power. An easier life can be had running the bare minimum of things off of 240v and using 12v or 24v where possible. We've recently ditched our mains TV for a 12v model.

A few years ago when I was running the local marina we had a lovely family turn up with a very big, expensive motor cruiser. At that time the shore power needed swipe cards which we sold.
The skipper asked how much power he got from a card and I told him, 4kW/hours.
Hmm, he says. Will that run my dishwasher?

I don't have a microwave, toaster or electric kettle. All can be done with my gas cooker that has a grill.
Keeping it simple certainly makes things simple.....

Given how much noise microwaves(ironically most of which is from the cooling fan!) make is a cooling fan that much of an issue?

Some boats even have induction hobs, and then need a second diesel engine to make them work (or stay in the marina on shore power). Madness.

I think you will need more than that for most!

The input power requirements are typically double the output. So a 650w microwave isn't going to get out of bed for less than 2kW inverter output, properly need a 3kW (peak) to give the required duty cycle and or start up current.

I have a Sterling 1000W inverter and it did run a small microwave. But it flattened batteries so fast I took the microwave home and use the space for extra storage.

Damn that Mr Ohm and his law...

Arrived in Birmingham - am pleasantly surprised !!
Clean, tidy, looks mostly well managed, lots to see and do.
Different moorings of 2/4/14 days all close to the city centre.

Ah, a great thread to ask this. We're renting a canal boat again on the Shroppie for a week. We've done it twice before, going from Audlem south (to just before Wolverhampton and back).

What's it like going north, is it as good?

Yes, the annual historic boat rally.
