Thank you sincerely for this link - a wealth of information here. I really appreciate it.
There are many canal bloggers - I can't vouch for how good they are but it might help build up a picture:https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=canal...
If I was in your position one of my early questions would be 'Where do I want to keep it?'

Frankly, this has been the biggest surprise for me - 500 a month to 'park' a boat. Something of a piss-take, I feel.
Can be cheaper, can be quite a lot more, all depending on which marina, part of the country, amenities etc.The other option I suppose is to be nomadic, which we call 'liveaboards', but that is a subject of its own.
The cost I object most to is the river licence; at least marinas are businesses trying to make a living.

He needs to leave the boat though for a few months a year.I found a mooring earlier this year on a river which was about £125 a month. This was not in a secure marina though, had no CCTV, was open to anybody passing, etc, somebody did keep an eye on it, cheapest I found - for a 42ft narrow boat.
Marinas will have staff there, probably gated, CCTV,etc.
