Here's a very basic question...
Does the canal have a current? Which way does it flow?
And if the boat is grounded - as in properly stuck isn't the flow of water restricted some what... why isn't it have a damn like effect? or is the boat still pretty much floating but just stuck at both ends?
Canals don't have current, rivers do though.Does the canal have a current? Which way does it flow?

There is talk of it effecting the supply of goods and maybe fuel to us pretty quickly. It was loaded up with tat from China bound for Europe so that won't get here, along with all the other ships it's holding up.
Damn it all, stop telling everyone. I'm busy panic buying Shimano bike parts right now, so that I can weather any shortages and keep my bike on the road...- Apparently, according to the BBC

I posted a link yesterday that seemed to say that because of the different levels at each end there is a current and it's direction varies.Does the canal have a current? Which way does it flow?

And another basic question. What keeps the water in ? Is there any kind of lining on the bed of the canal or is it just water on top of the sand ?
If there are no locks it's at sea level. So the water doesn't need to be kept in...hidetheelephants said:

haha. Have you ever been to a beach? It's not a bad question. The canals in the UK are lined with clay to stop them from draining, they are also being constantly topped up by streams, but have overflows at a certain height so they can't overfill.

To be fair I think the name "Suez Canal" makes people assume it is something like a British canal which are made to put water where it isn't naturally meant to be
