I lived in Cambridge for a long while and 10 years ago I was renting a bedsit for £500 per month, this was in the centre near the river so nice area, but goodness knows what it would cost now, and it literally was a small room with a futon and a bathroom. City centre is premium rates for foreign students so it will be expensive. I also house shared but that was paid straight out of my wages. Then moved into a T-House in St Ives about 8 years ago about 30 mins outside for Cambridge not bad communte but the A14 is a bithc and the house still cost about £6/700 a month, and wages didn't seem to match the high price of living, I moved to Lincoln to a better wage but half the cost of living, and my ex OH actually communted from Lincoln to Cambridge for a while.
Lovely area to live though, very beautiful, always think about going back. Probably as a student though as it's cheaper

I have lived in Cambridge as a student many years ago and then when I was working at a townie. Driving is cr@p and it is expensive hence why with each move we have ended up a little bit further away from town.
There are a lot of tech jobs in Cambridge and salaries vary. House shares for professionals do exist - I have had friends do this for a while - they paid about £40-50 per week about 10 years ago - sorry I am so horribly old and out of date.
We live in a village west of Cambridge that meets all our needs. 10 years ago I had a few colleagues who lived in Waterbeach (about 4-5 miles out) and commuted in by train whihc was cheap and easy. I don't know what it's like now.

Average wage is probably very high. Rents are about £650 pcm, for a studio apartment bear in mind. Houses of any sort are over £1,000 pcm.
Parking! My god, its amazing. Something stupid like £25 overnight, £3.40 an hour I think.
Driving is prohibited in the centre, on pain of death.
West of town is wealthy, South has the most expensive houses in the UK outside London, Sedley Taylor and Luard Road. North is impoverished and full of scroungers and scum, south-east is fairly alright. De Freville estate is full of wealthy mumsy types and very expensive houses.

You want to get hold of the Cambridge Evening News, Thursday edition. It has a large supplement on buying and renting houses in Cambridge and the villages. There is plenty of rental in Cambridge, but it is expensive, I know that an unfurnished 3 bed semi- detached near the main hospital will rent out at £1300 a month, I would expect bedsits/rooms to be £500 plus a month. All depends on where you want to live, there are areas in Cambridge that are cheap, but they are cheap for a reason. Plenty of nice villages around, avoid the A14 its awful. Avoid the A10 Ely side, awful to get into Cambridge in the morning. If you are working in Cambridge be prepared for big delays in the rush hour.
