I'm looking to start getting down the gym again, and was wondering if anyone can recommend anywhere with a decent gym around Luton/Dunstable? Either somewhere round the north part of Luton somewhere near the A6/Birdsfoot Lane, or somewhere just off J10/11 M1.

Somewhere with a decent swimming pool as well would be a big bonus.

Any recommendations?
Cheers

I use David Lloyd in Capability Green (which has a small pool) but am just about to leave cos they're putting up the price yet again to a staggering £71/month. I understand there's a JJB gym towards Dunstable, and my mate rates it highly. About £40/month, including all classes (circuit etc.). I'll probably join the Vauxhall gym which is just below Capability Green, though I don't think there's a pool for you there. My other possibilty is the gym/pool in Harpenden, though I need to call tomorow for their price (but that's the opposite direction from you anyway).

There's an indepenant gym on the roundabout on the A505 between Luton and Dunstable, very close to Jn 11.

Is that Fitness First - just off the Tesco roundabout? Or Dimensions Fitness (same location pretty much, just the other side of the road?

I stuck my head round the door of JJB as its pretty convenient location wise and has a pool - think it was £35/month. Might go back and do the guided tour now I've heard that.

As you say, David Lloyd and anything in Harpenden is out. I considered Bannatynes but popping there during rush hour would be a bit of a slog, and its a little bit steep £50/month.

I'm still considering Vauxhall Gym as a friend of mine rates it quite highly, but the pool is a bit of a decider for me - unless theres a pool nearby that does a reasonable rate for membership, and has lanes open all day - anywhere you know that springs to mind?

I only know of the pools in St.A, Harpenden and Hatfield, so none local to you.

On the gym front, I just called Harpers in Harpenden, who charge £38/month. They open at 6am, which is ideal as I can pop in there on the way to work and be near enough to my office in Luton to not worry about heavy traffic when I head out after 7am. So, I've just written my David Lloyd resignation (three month notice!!) and shall likely join Harpers at the end of the year. Feel good about that, as I felt DL have been fleecing me for long enough now!

I was thinking of Dimensins, owned by an old aquaintance who I've not seen in ages, fellow petrolhead.

Might have a nosy, but not being able to swim at all would put me off.

Cheers for the pointers.

I goto the HolidayInn Motivation gym junction 9 on the A5. Cost's £35 a month when I signed up. No contract just rolling contract.

Either that or JJB's in Dunstable which is very nice.

Hi there, I'm a member at the DW (used to be JJB) gym in Dunstable.

Really like it, good staff, nice pool and modern not-too-busy gym area.

Also, easily accessible from Luton.

hello mate, I've been considering going to JJB's. I only swim of which I do 5/6 times a week after work around 6.45pm for 1/2 hour. And half hour on a Sunday.

If the pool quiet because my current pool can get very busy and being small can be a RPITA.

Thank you

Cheers. Has it changed any (price or otherwise) since it changed from JJB?

Hi, I swim 5 days too, but at lunch time. The pool area is usually fairly good - not too busy. There is a permanent lane which I find a little narrow.

I go there after work too but to the gym area - can have a look in the pool if you like?
