The Clock Restuarant and Motel right next to the A1 near Welwyn is all boarded up.

Does any one know why?

It's a huge site as well. I wonder what will happen to it now

I noticed that, plus the houses next to it.

Possibly fire related?

I think the Parent company has gone into administation, and I have heard that the whole site will be bulldozed!

Another landmark bites the dust. Along with the Milehouse Pub in St Albans. All down to money I suppose. Oh and the Bell Pub at the roundabout London Colney..erm The Waggon and Horses at Ridge but that was a long time ago. :-(

I believe Quality hotels went into administration, closing the Welwyn site and the Hatfield site has been sold and renamed

I have stayed there on a few times and it was quite a dump and in need of massive investment, food was good though

I can remember when "The Clock" was on the main road, and it was out in the countryside...

And the MG Car Club used to have a monthly meet at The Bell in London Colney, long before my MGA was a "classic"!

My Grandad (who isn't with us anymore) used to be head chef at The Clock Restaurant before it became a hotel and he met my nan there. Pretty sad to see it go.

ps. AMv8 roar sounds great under the A1M bridge next to the clock :P

If you head towards Mardley Hill under the A1M thats a really nice bend, I should imagine an Aston (in fact any Aston) would sound superb under the bridge smile

Nice building, would be a shame to Bulldoze it.

But it was a crap hotel / restaurant, i had the misfortune to stay there quite regularly with work at one time.

Would make a great site for a car dealership.

- Showroom
- Workshop
- Carparking space

and best of all some cracking test routes on the door step.

- Welwyn to Hitchin (twisties)
- A1 to Stevenage (dual carrageway)
- A1 to Hatfield (for a tunnel run) biggrin
- Tewin to Hertford (more twisties)

Hears hoping scratchchin

I've noticed that all the lead flashings and some of the tiles have been stripped from the roofs.

Gyppo's, no doubt!

They have been off a while now, and it was indeed our pikey friends. I live in Oaklands just down the road, but not on the gypsy site.

Bulldozers in there now.

I suppose after last weeks fire, which caused the A1 to be shut, they had no choice.

How long will it be before pikey moves onto the site? I reckon by Christmas smile
