Due to the Hatfield tunnel closing in a few months, I'm planning on moving fro Hitchin to Welwyn / Welwyn Garden city to be a bit closer to work (Hatfield side of St Albans).

Are there any areas to avoid? I've 2 cars and a bike so a garage in a nice quiet location is a must.

Not closing, lane restrictions and 40mph limit.
This is according to what Grant Shapps (local Tory MP and general good guy) can get out of Government....

Perhaps a place in an outside village such as Tewin or Digswell? WGC on the whole is good, but avoid Haldens and Woodhall + Surrounding area (I think thats how its spelt)

My understanding is they'll be closing south first, and having a contraflow north, then vice versa for a year at a time.

Unfortunately it's not for something sensible like widening. It's for disability access.

Nicked from Honest John as the WHT link doesn't work rolleyes

Honest John said:
The A1(M) northbound tunnel Hatfield Tunnel will close from July 2009 until May 2010 and then the southbound tunnel will then be closed until April 2011.

The Highways Agency propose to operate a contra-flow system for traffic on the A1(M) when each of the tunnels is closed.

The closures are to make the tunnel compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act.

Welwyn Garden City is pretty much ok, certainly better than most parts of Hatfield, Id try and avoid Woodhall area, unless you can get a drive, tends to be quite a bit of drunken anti social beahaviour late at night

I have just spoken to my dad and he said he cannot guarantee that there would be a second parking space, especially with the near-by pub now being renovated.

If you HAVE to have two spaces as per your spec, this now isn't for you frown
