Hi all

Moving to MK at the end of this month to start a new job in Cranfield (Beds) at the start of September. I lived in MK back in 07 but only for a year so I need some help deciding where to live! I've checked on gumtree.com and spareroom.co.uk but nothing is immediately obvious.

I'm looking for a double room with a short commute by car to Cranfield so probably based north of Central MK, to go into work via Newport Pagnell. What are the areas to go for/avoid in this part of town? And how much should I be paying to rent a double room, ideally in a house with no more than 5 people?

Ideally I'd like my partner to be able to visit me 1 or 2 weekends a month so don't want something too scruffy...

Thanks for your help

Regards
Nick

There are a few decent house shares in Broughton. A mate has recently moved out of one (it has been filled).

Think the going rate is around 100 per week?

Another vote for Broughton. Also look at Monkston, Monkston Park, Middleton and possibly Brooklands. We live on Monkston and my OH recently had an interview for a job at Cranfield university and it took her just over 10 mins to get there.
This side of the city isnt too bad as a lot of it is new build just try ro avoid Fishermead, Oldbrook, Springfield, Netherfeild etc lots of shared houses over on those areas that are really ropey.

Nick, if you're going to work at Nissan (which dept?) one of the lads I know who works there has a house just outside Bedford (New Cardington) and is looking to rent a double room out.

If you're interested PM me.

Thanks guys, some good suggestions there and I'll get searching. Unfortunately gumtree seems full of places in the Fishermead type areas, I will have to keep looking!

Cyder, yes I'll be working at Nissan, I've decided to live in MK itself but will pm you some details anyway.

Anyone know any other good websites for this type of thing?

Regards

Nick

I would personally avoid Broughton.

Whilst a brand new estate, it's spitting distance from the M1 and....well let's just say that it's not the classiest of estates IMO.

Look in Newport Pagnell, Monkston and Willen.

Broughton isnt quite as nice as it could be but the big houses on Milton Road are nice and a few of them are shared houses, and as for the motorway there is no noise from it at all my mate lives on Brooklands which is even closer to the M1 and you cant hear it from the garden.

Are there many houseshares in Newport Pagnell?

Thanks again.

I actually used to live in Broughton for a few months in 2007 when on placement. I'm guessing it's a lot bigger these days. I think it's nice but pricey for what it is, ended up moving to Bradwell and found it much better.

There seems to be few houseshares at a reasonable price in anywhere other than Oldbrook, Fishermead etc, so despite the warning earlier have made a few enquiries assisted by google maps images smile I want somewhere my partner can visit me one weekend a month and I don't think living with a live-in landlord is the best recipe for that...

Move to Newport, plenty of house shares about here. I love it here and actually drive past Cranfield on the way to work everyday and can leave my house at 8 and get to Cranfield junction for 8.10 everyday....

I know someone who was after a housemate, can find out more if you like?

Newport Pagnell is OK, but I'd avoid the area of the Poets Estate near to the shops. Close into the centre parking can be a pain, and it will take a few minutes to get onto the grid system during busy periods. If your partner intends to travel by train to visit, consider somewhere closer to CMK, Willen or Bolbeck Park are quite nice.

Broughton being close to the M1 doesn't have any negative impact IMO. I'm in Brooklands and as mentioned above there is no noise.

There is a fair bit of social housing in the area but that's to be expected with new build regulations. I've never seen any real problems due to the social housing thing.

I've managed to arrange viewings in the following areas, all double rooms at £350-415 per month inclusive of bills:

Bradville
Great Linford
Gifford Park
Fishermead
Corniburrow
Bradwell Common

I did look at Broughton & Monkston but the rents are more than I wanted to pay since the whole point is to avoid the cost of a house rent & save up for a mortgage.

Anyone have any experience of car insurance costs in MK before I ring my insurer and run through half a dozen postcodes?

Dont do it to yourself. The others arent too bad and insurance was cheaper in the MK13 postcode for me than it is in the MK10 postcode.
