saw a JLC for sale today second hand in a jewellers. It looked like a master calendar excep it had a black face and the moon phase looked more like stars than the moon. It was up at £2950. It had the JLC strap in near new condition, a glass back and alhough the jeweller said he was seling it on behalf of a customer and couldn't give any service history he assured me the owner had the box and papers and they were willing to call the ownwer for service history if I was genuinely interested.

Does it sound like a model anyone knows because I haven't seen a MC with a black face before and definitely not with the stas and moon? Is it an old model?

I really liked it but want to be sure I am not paying over the odds.

There is asimilar looking model with black dial known as the master moon. As far as I can remember it was the model prior to the master calendar.

I've been through three JLC catalogues and there is no mention of a Master Calendar with a black dial, however, I am not certain that is proof either way.

As boxster9 says the Master Moon was definitely available with a black dial. However, I don't think the Master Moon was ever available with a display back.

Finally both the Master Moon and Master Calendar have moonphase displays with moon and stars.

That's it!

Th Master Moon in a non-black dial is $6000 new so it looks like he is asking for almost the new retail price at £2950. One US site recently had one they sold at $2995 so even with import duty etc it would be alot cheaper than this one. Some sites are still selling the balck dial to, so it couldn't have been discontinued long ago. Nice looking watch. I might put these prices to them and see if they's take a cheeky offer. Had it been under £2k I would probably have had it there and then, just as well I checked. Thanks guys.
