Complications, that are not that complicated

Why do people charge so much for a perpetual calendar? Had one watch dealer blabbering on for ages about how complicated it was, and when I pointed out you only needed a gearing set that generated a signal every ~1500 days or so he didn't know what to say. Now in the old days when gear set would have been made by hand, then yes, clearly a clever thing to do, but in this day and age machines are quite capable of knocking out very accurate small gears no bother.
