I'm in the market for a new "day" watch, and my first "real" watch.

Though funds a pretty tight.
Looking for a Automatic really (just for engineering intrest), but not particularly worried about the brand. Though obviously I would like it to be reasonably accurate and pretty well built.

Arbutus caught my eye but not sure if the movement is anygood?
http://www.arbutus-newyork.com/ar206.html

Or any other suggestions?

Bl**dy hell their website is awful.

I would guess from what little I could glean that the movement is Chinese.

I would personally be looking at Seiko, RLT or Timefactors in that price range.

I've just purchased an automatic watch - at the very, very bottom end of the market. It's a "J Springs" from Ebay. J Springs are part of the Seiko empire. The watch has a rotating bezel (which I use virtually daily on my everyday Seiko), is "waterproof" to 10ATMS and is fine in a swimming pool and the sea. It keeps really good time (though I haven't checked it accurately it probably runs a second or two fast a day), has day and date function and a clear back so that I can see the workings. All this for only £45.00 - I paid £5.00 extra in that for next day delivery. It may not be a "name" that's gonna score you kudos amongst the cognoscenti but may be a good way into the market without spending too much...

Nice watches are J-Springs, but nowhere near that accurate.

The movement used in the J-Spring watch is usually the 7S26 or like (Accurate and tough Seiko "workhorse" movements) and that has a manufacturers figure of +/-25seconds per day. Although I have heard on other forums that they are quite often around +/-10secs and they can be regulated down to a maximum of about +/-5seconds. Getting the 7S26 or it's ilk down to +/-1second is not likely at all. They are good, but not quite that good

Still, every J-Spring I have seen has been bloody nice looking and shocking for the money. Nice one clap

Or, if you cant stretch to closer to £100 (Ive bought them for under £70 though): Seiko SKX007 or 009. These professional divers watches are rated at 200 meters rather than 100m (as the Seiko 5 dives are, making them divers style, really) and theyre hard to fault.

As I said, not checked it properly, but it "seems" accurate. I will endeavour to check it a bit more scientifically and see what results I get.

If you don't mind divers style as mentioned above you can't go wrong with the humble 007. You can pick one up for under £100, Got mine on now

Not sure about the 5 its just that bit to bland for me.

But then don't like the monster as its too OTT.

Maybee I'm too picky?

Do like the 007 & 009 though. Is their any difference other than the colouring?

There are some very nice pieces on the RLT site. Anyone know what the Vostok's are like. I need an inexpensive every day piece and quite like the look of them.
