£600 New, Stylish, Stuck
Discussion
Sinn U1 though I'm not sure if qualifies as a 'well known brand'. You may be able to get a used one for a few notes more (around £650 maybe?). Fantastic, versatile watches.
Many people have good things to say about the Omega seamaster (I've never tried one myself). Again it would be a used example, I've seen a few quartz models go for around £500. I imagine a nudge over £600 may get you an auto.
There are huge selection on the wristcheck thread, you could try and give more hints as to what you look want (flieger/diver/chronograph/auto/quartz etc)

I'm curious to hear whether the OP considers Sinn a well-known brand. I'd never heard of it before I started frequenting this forum.
Therein lies the point of joining a forum like this. Sinn isn't that well known but amongst the connoisseurs it is a highly respected make - tough, reliable, and not to be seen on everyone's wrist. One can go for an upper range Seiko at this price range or a second hand quartz Seamaster but personally a Sinn for me. It's a bit like my IWC chrono - once in a while a person murmurs "great watch, good choice" and you know you are with someone who really knows his watches, not someone who knows very little. When Sinn bring out a 42mm 656 I'll be the first in the queue for one but my recommendation for the OP is a 656 on a strap which is within his budget.lowdrag said:

No doubt there was someone in the restaurant wearing a Glashutte Original or a Dornblueth & Sohne, looking at my IWC, and thinking 'How obvious!'
I wonder if the OP would consider Glycine a sufficiently well-known brand? If he likes divers, a Lagunare 1000 may well be within budget and I think they're cracking watches.
I can't find a picture to post but this is the one I mean
E.T.A. As Seb D. had already suggested above...
