I'm going to see an early 90's Rolex, this weekend with a view to buying. The only issue with the watch is that it has no guarantee card, but does have a recent service certificate.

What sort of effect would this have on price?

Personally I'd hang fire until I found one with the Guarantee Certificate. If it's an early 90's watch it's not as if you can't find another one that's a full set. As the watch gets older the lack of this will impact on the value. Look at the huge difference this makes on 'vintage' Rolex for an indication.

Personally, i don't understand this obsession with 'papers'. If you buy right and the item is a 'good un' what difference does a piece of paper make with little holes punched in it. In this case a service warranty reciept gives the watch all the provenance it needs and could ever have wink

I agree that the service papers confirm the provenance. However the cost of obtaining a 1990's watch with the original guarantee paper's will not have a huge impact on price vs. one without. However having the original Guarantee paper as the watch gets older will increase it's appeal in the market place.

As long as the service certificate identifies is as a Rolex, and more so, serviced at a Rolex agent, no problem.

Which model is it?

This will have a bearing on the impact on value of papers/ no papers. smile

Well I have passed on the no papers model and am going to see a different one tomorrow.

A big thanks to one of our members for helping me out.
