Hi chaps,

I'm looking at getting myself a descent watch to replace my Animal, nothing expensive, just something that isn't throwaway cheap.

My critera at the moment are; Sports chrono, Stainless case witha bracelet, nothing too big (42mm case) and if possible an automatic movement or similar (basicly something that I don't have to send off to get batteries replaced).

So far i've been looking at things like Certinas and Tissosts (approx £200 budget) as I'm quite keen on getting something with a swiss movement, but I'm wondering if I'd be better off going for a higher end Jap watch (Seiko, Citizen Ecodrive) rather than a low end swiss watch. Your thoughts on this would be appriciated. Ta!

PS - I've had a look on Werners and they haven't got anything that I *really* like at the moment.

Bottom line is that with your budget the mechanical watches that are Swiss movements will most likely be less accurate than the quartz examples. If you're after accuracy and robustness then I'd go quartz. If you're not particularly bothered then the choice is yours. As has been said Chris Ward might be of interest. Having said that I really like my Seiko Kinetic...

you wont get a good Seiko auto chrono at that price, but you can get a good chrono Kinetic (movement powered quartz).

If you can live without the chrono, then one of these is a very good bet:

Hey chaps,

Thanks for the responses - hadn't come across Christopher Ward before now but having had a look through another post on here and after nosing about his website I'm rather impressed. Quality swiss movements for a fraction of the price of the major swiss brands. Plus customer service and quality control seems to be through the roof.

At the end of the day I'm not really so bothered about the brand of the watch on my wrist or where it's made, more the quality. Plus I'm not buying a watch to impress my mates down at the pub (oooh, nice watch etc).

That Seiko divers watch is nice too, but I'm not sure if my girly wrists could suit a 44mm watch.
