I've got my eye on a fantastic looking watch which I think will be collectable in future but its got a quartz movement....plus its gonna be kinda expensive i.e. over £600.

Is there a ceiling on values of quartz watches or are they pretty collectable also?

Thanks

Cartier will charge you thousands for quartz movements (ladies watches I might add), depends on the name.

There are two types of quartz watches:
  • Regular quartz movements as fond in Swatches, Casios and the likes. They are dead cheap and a nogo for any serious watch
  • Quartz powered mechanical movements. They have a proper mechanical movement but instead of the manual/automatic winding mechanism there is a quartz power source. That's what Patek use. Still, a quartz watch has never the collector's appeal as a fully mechanical one

I'd love a Sinn UX which costs £1000 on a bracelet and has a quartz movement.

sort of...i mean there are some quartz watches that hold value such as the rarer G-Shocks, and early Seiko and Pulsar quartz watches are going up in value as there are not many left (espeically the early digital pulsars).

Quartz seamasters tend to pop up on ebay at around £400ish, compared to around £7-800 for comparable autos.
Given that there was about a £300 difference when new, you aren't losing a great deal more in absolute terms, although it's obviously a higher percentage of purchase price.

IF you're looking for decent priced tags on ebay then this lot look quite tasty...

If something being quartz doesn't bother you then sod the snobs and buy what you like. Budgetary constraints when I got my seamaster meant a quartz and I still love it.

Those are much the same price that M&W are selling in their Edinburgh store ie 30% off.

Not so keen on the current F1s anyway but I did like that yellow version of the previous model.

I can't help but think that fine watches should be something that you want to keep for life and then hand on to be enjoyed and treasured by future generations. This should be prefectly possible with good automatics and if serviced and looked after they should be more than capable of "out living" the owner. There are dozens of places that specilise in vintage watches now days and top manufacturers are proud to say that they can service and repair any movement they have ever produced. But I just doubt that a quartz watch will be so usable in 50+ years time, infact I simply doubt you'll be able to get a battery. But only time will prove me right or wrong.
