Hi all,

Going to Geneva in a few weeks time and was wandering if general prices of Rolexes (sp) was cheaper than the extortionate ones in the UK?

Looking for a SS Oyster Prepetual Datejust for my dad as a birthday present and was wandering if they would be any cheaper in Geneva at all on the off chance?

also, any good places in Geneva to go and check out Rolex watches?

Thanks guys

dunno about the base price but you can claim sales tax back which effectively means a nice discount. The shop gives you a form and you post it in a letter box at the airport and a few weeks later the tax is re-credited to your credit card

Theres more that 20% off retail prices at Heathrow departures, thats before you get out of the country, plus you wont have to send any forms off to claim anything back

Spend a lot of time in Geneva and it works out after tax back (easy to do btw) that you'll save around 10%, depending on exchange rates,

The Rolex boutique / shop is on a side street just off the the main road / tram route in the new town (look for the FNAC store, its to the right of there). They also sell Rolex in a great sore by the Lake front, can't remember what its called but its near the Patek AD.

HTH

(Good city for food too!)

Thanks chaps.

will obviously check Heathrow prices and compare them to Geneva.

I have some time to get this present sorted so can pick up from Heathrow on a future trip if it is working out cheaper...

Haven't been for a couple of years, but IIRC there's also now a dedicated Rolex store in Geneva airport seperate from the "multi brand" duty free watch stores. Don't know prices/discounts though.

I can confirm that the tax re-claim if you buy in the city is a very straightforward process. I bought my IWC in a city centre store in 2001 (before IWC "boutique" opened), got a reasonable price and then got the tax back.

When I bought mine in Geneva, the store gave me a form to fill in and drop off at the airport. They also took a credit card pre-authorisation for the tax value in case I didn't drop off the form which of course I did. Dead easy!

I was hoping to find something at Geneva in April, the most grumpy unhelpful bunch of to**ers I have ever met, would never buy from them

Buy in Geneva itself and not at the airport. Shop around around and offer cash. The retailer will sell tax free but will require a credit card authorisation for the sales tax/vat in case you fail to hand in the paperwork at the airport. Wait till the exchange rates improve though. I bought my watches when the rate peaked at 2.5 SFr to £ admittedly a number of years ago. When I first decided what I wanted the rate was 1.8. Took 3 years to get to 2.5

Many of the jewellers would appear to be to upmarket to haggle. Don't fall for it. They change their tune when you talk cash.

A few months ago I sold the Cartier to a dealer in Bond St for roughly what I paid for it in Geneva in 2000.

I find T5 very cheap for watches at the moment. IWC big pilot was approx £1k off retail and cheaper than I found in Zug.
